Not all attending were Fenty fans

About 30 members of the Save Our Schools Coalition kicked off the inaugural ball Saturday with a protest, condemning Mayor Adrian Fenty’s plan to take command of the school system.

Activists argue the proposal, which would drastically reduce the elected Board of Education’s role, is a slap to the face of Home Rule. And they’re furious that Fenty would move forward with amendments to the Home Rule charter without a voter referendum.

“People have a right to speak,” said Marc Borbely, a coalition member. “And they’re really ignoring us as voters.”

The coalition also claims the Federal City Council, a powerful organization of business leaders, is backing the takeover in order to assume control of the school system’s real estate bounty.

The protesters carried signs including “No school takeover” and “We elected Fenty, not the FCC.”
