Pro-Cruz super PAC: ‘Donald Trump is not a conservative’

Supporters of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential campaign have launched a new televised ad that slams Donald Trump’s ever-changing positions on abortion.

Keep the Promise, a group of pro-Cruz super PACs, included the ad among its $2.5 million ad buy in the two early nominating states of Iowa and South Carolina.

“Donald Trump is not a conservative because he’s extreme on abortion,” a narrator is heard saying in the ad.

The ad shows Trump talking to the late Tim Russert about his pro-choice position on abortion, in which Trump claims to be “pro-choice in every respect.”

Trump has since changed his position on abortion and wrote an op-ed in Monday’s Washington Examiner writing that he is now pro-life.

“Let me be clear — I am pro-life. I support that position with exceptions allowed for rape, incest or the life of the mother being at risk,” Trump wrote. “I did not always hold this position, but I had a significant personal experience that brought the precious gift of life into perspective for me. My story is well documented, so I will not retell it here.”

Trump’s conversion from pro-choice to pro-life is not well-documented, however he has described that his flip-flop came after meeting a child who was not aborted and went on to become “a total superstar.”

Asked later if he would have become pro-life had the child not become a “superstar,” Trump answered, “That’s an interesting question. I’ve never thought of it. Probably not, but I’ve never thought of it.”

With under a week to go until the Iowa caucus, Cruz supporters hope to motivate evangelical Christian voters to turnout to defeat Trump. Cruz, who ranks first in the Washington Examiner‘s newest GOP presidential power rankings, will campaign in Iowa on Monday.
