Washington Post compares Trump to Mussolini before deciding he’s not a fascist

A column in the Washington Post this weekend rated how “fascist” Republican Donald Trump is, using a “fascist meter” illustrated with photos of little Benito Mussolini heads.

The column, by Georgetown University history professor George McNeill, looked at certain historical markers as well as political attritubes to see how closely aligned Trump and his political supporters are with fascism.

It then used “zero to four ‘Benitos'” to illustrate the degree to which they align, such as on “hyper-nationalism” (two Benitos); “fetishization of masculinity” (four Benitos); and “theatricality” (three Benitos).

In the end, though, out of a possible 44 “Benitos,” McNeill awarded Trump 26.

“In the fascist derby,” wrote McNeill, “Trump is a loser.”
