Donald Trump questioned Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith Sunday, saying the failed 2012 Republican nominee is not smart enough to be a Mormon.
In an interview Sunday on ABC News’ “This Week,” Trump defended his recent statement questioning whether Romney is a really a Mormon. Noting Trump’s reaction when Pope Francis seemed to question the real estate mogul’s Christianity, Stephanopoulos asked how Trump can question another person’s faith.
“You can take it any way you want, “Trump said.
“I don’t think Mitt Romney is a smart person. I never have thought he was a smart person,” he said. “But the Mormons are very smart people,” Trump continued, adding he is not going to back track his past comments.
Romney, who is the first member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to win a major party nomination for the presidency, this week announced that he will be supporting Trump’s rival Ted Cruz during Tuesday’s caucuses in Utah, a state with a large Mormon population.
Romney publicly condemned the billionaire candidate’s candidacy. He called Trump “a phony” and “a fraud,” during a speech in Utah earlier in the month.
