Six in 10 don’t trust the government to do what’s right

Republicans are in the driver’s seat with the midterms a week away.

Riding a wave of public dissatisfaction with President Obama and a concern for the direction of the country, Republicans are poised to take control of Congress, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Six in 10 poll respondents say they cannot trust the government to do what’s right, and that the government’s ability to deal with big problems has been on the decline for the past few years.

By a three to one margin, those polled blame Obama and Democrats rather than congressional Republicans for the problems facing the country.

Among registered voters, almost a third said they’re voting to oppose Obama, 10 points higher than those who said they’ll vote in support of the president. Fifty-six percent said Obama is not a factor in voting.

Though the poll offers only general insight into the Senate races, voters expressed a preference for the Republican in their respective House districts in the nine states with competitive races.

The random sample poll of 1,204 adults was conducted by phone Oct. 23-26 with a margin of sampling error of three percentage points.
