Brits living stateside had their own opportunity to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee, with a garden party at the British Embassy Monday night and lunch party at the British School of Washington on Tuesday.
More than one teacher sported a mask bearing the monarch’s face at Tuesday’s event. (Deputy Ambassador Phillip Barton assured Yeas & Nays that these masks are normal.)
Barton expressed pleasure at the enthusiasm Americans display for British royalty, particularly Prince William’s nuptials. “What really struck me,” he said, “was how into it people in the United States were. It really took me aback, the enthusiasm for it.”
Barton also put to rest the lingering drama over first lady Michelle Obama wearing a cardigan to meet her Majesty the Queen in 2009. “No one cared about what she was wearing,” he said.
