The comedian and actor Sinbad is one of the headliners for this year’s Leukemia Ball, sharing the honor with the band Foreigner, and from the sounds of it, he’s ready for a Washington audience. Sinbad told Yeas & Nays he’s paying close attention to the presidential election. “I mean how could [I] not?” he joked. “It’s taken on a life of its own.” And he even sat down last week and watched the new HBO political drama, “Game Change.” “I’m blown away,” he said. “It’s almost scary that she almost became vice president of the United States of America, which means she was close to becoming president of the United States of America.” Though comedy, he thought, played a big part in the McCain/Palin ticket not succeeding. “I actually think ‘Saturday Night Live’ actually affected that whole presidential campaign and Tina Fey just happened to have that resemblance to Sarah Palin,” he said.
As for his own jokes they’ve been aimed at just about every candidate this cycle. “One will stand out and then another one will do something that makes you go, ‘Wow, where did that come from?'” he said. Sinbad said he was shocked that Herman Cain would run with all that baggage. “If you’re going to have that much damage, you might want to talk to everyone around you before you run, you might want to take a poll — like who do you think is going to tell?” he laughed. He also portrayed Romney as kind of pitiful. “He’s like a guy at a track meet who should be winning and you can’t figure out why he can’t pull away from the pack,” Sinbad said.
This year’s ball, which marks the event’s 25th year, is scheduled for Saturday March 31 and will take place at the Washington Convention Center. The event is expected to draw in $3.1 million for the National Capital Area Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
