Clinton wins Alabama, solidifies lead as Democratic front-runner

Hillary Clinton emerged victorious in Alabama on Super Tuesday, solidifying her place as the Democratic front-runner for president and besting Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.

Alabama allocates 60 Democratic delegates, 53 of which are obligated by the popular vote cast on Tuesday. The remaining seven are able to cast their ballot up until the date of the convention regardless of voters’ preference.

The race was called by major media outlets just moments after polls closed in the state. Clinton was expected to perform well in the state, since she has much more support among African-American voters than Sanders.

Heading into the night, Clinton held a “commanding” lead over Sanders. A Monmouth University poll released Monday showed 71 percent of likely voters in Alabama supporting the former secretary of state, compared to 23 percent supporting Sanders.
