U.S. drone flying from Turkey conducts strike in Syria

A U.S. drone flying from Turkey conducted the first strike against the Islamic State in Syria on Tuesday, the Pentagon said.

While unmanned U.S. missions began flying from the Incirlik air base in Turkey over the weekend, Capt. Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters Wednesday that a drone dropped the first bomb earlier this week, though it is not clear if the strike was successful.

Davis declined to share the strike’s target or where in Syria it took place.

Preparations also have started for the U.S. to start flying manned fighter plane missions from Turkey, and Davis said he expected those to begin in the “near future.”
