It’s official: George W. Bush will make his 2016 debut in support of his brother Jeb Bush on Monday.
As first reported by The State in Columbia, S.C., the 43rd president will be on the trail for his brother at a campaign rally Monday evening in North Charleston. The former Florida governor is looking to turn the tide after an underwhelming sixth place Iowa finish and nabbing fourth place in New Hampshire on Tuesday.
The former Florida governor hopes his brother can help deliver a solid number in the Palmetto State, where the former president won in the 2000 GOP primary over Sen. John McCain and in the 2000 and 2004 general elections.
“President Bush has been incredibly supportive of his brother’s campaign and Gov. Bush is excited to have him out on the trail,” said Kristy Campbell, a Bush spokeswoman, in a statement. “With the threats facing our nation and our allies, we need a steady hand. Few people understand that better than President Bush who knows that we need a tested, strong leader as our next commander in chief.”
The appearance from the former president also follows up on campaign stops by the pair’s mother, former first lady Barbara Bush, who made multiple appearances ahead of the New Hampshire primary.
Recently, the former president cut an ad for Right To Rise, the super PAC supporting his brother, which aired during the Super Bowl.
The event is slated for 6 p.m. at the North Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
According to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls, the former governor sits fourth in South Carolina with 10 percent support, trailing Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio.
