The highest-ranking Democratic senator said Thursday he sees a lot of himself in GOP front-runner Donald Trump.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who offered insight into the Democratic race, also weighed in on similarities between him and the Republican real estate mogul from Manhattan.
“He’s a person who is authentic. You may not agree with his authenticity but he’s authentic. People like that. He speaks his mind, which reminds me of me once in a while,” Reid told CNN’s Jake Tapper Thursday.
The Nevada senator called Trump’s seven-month political career “refreshing” for how he speaks his mind, regardless of whether he thinks a statement is politically correct or appropriate.
“People identify with that. It wouldn’t sell very well with Democrats but he’s selling pretty well with Republicans,” said Reid, subtly bashing the GOP.
Reid didn’t comment on the first-ranked Republican’s candidate’s chances of beating the Democrats’ nominee, but went off on Florida Sen. Marco Rubio’s comments that liberals are terrified to run against him.
“He came in third in one election, in Iowa. He came in fifth in New Hampshire. I’m not quaking in my boots I’ll tell you that,” Reid chuckled.
