Hillary Clinton was quick to take advantage of Jeb Bush’s unscripted remark that he was “not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues.” The Democratic front-runner suggested this was part of a larger trend for Republicans.
“And just today, we got another window into what Republican candidates really believe,” Clinton said in response to Bush’s statement. “Now, he has got no problem giving billions of dollars away to super-wealthy and powerful corporations, but I guess women’s health just isn’t a priority for him.”
Immediately after Bush’s gaffe, his campaign said that it was a mistake and he meant to say that he meant to say that we should defund Planned Parenthood, and he apologized on his website, saying he “misspoke.”
Clinton shot back at Bush via Twitter saying he was “absolutely, unequivocally wrong.” Planned Parenthood issued a statement saying that “told the rest of America what Florida women have known for years, which is that he doesn’t believe women’s health is worth much.”
Bush has supported defunding Planned Parenthood since the recent scandal about the organization’s handling of aborted fetal tissue. Clinton stood with the nation’s top abortion provider in the wake of these allegations.
“This really isn’t complicated. When you attack Planned Parenthood, you attack women’s health, and when you attack women’s health, you attack America’s health,” Clinton said. “The truth is, what Jeb said, the other Republican candidates believe too.”
