U.N. investigators arrive in Iran to look into alleged nuclear site

United Nations nuclear inspectors have arrived in Iran.

The investigators arrived Wednesday, on a long-stalled visit to look into and discuss suspicions that Tehran has worked on nuclear weapons — a charge the country has denied.

According to the official IRNA news agency, Iranian nuclear spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency arrived in Tehran Wednesday to discuss “unresolved issues” about a military site in Marivan.

A 2011 International Atomic Energy Agency report alleges large-scale, high-explosive experiments were conducted in the western Iranian city, near the Iraqi border.

The talks with IAEA inspectors are crucial toward nuclear negotiations between Iran and five world powers, who are working toward a final deal by a June 30 deadline.

Iran has insisted its nuclear program is strictly peaceful and hopes economic sanctions placed on it will be soon be removed once a deal is reached.
