A cadre of influential Republican donors and business leaders are coming together in an effort to stop Donald Trump as he looks to move toward the requisite number of delegates with a strong Super Tuesday.
According to The New York Times, Meg Whitman, Paul Singer and Tom Ricketts held a conference calls with 50 individuals and urged them to contribute to Our Principles PAC in an effort to halt Trump’s momentum.
The trio have come together to push against Trump as his campaign looks to keep up momentum from the early voting states, where he won three of the first four states — all of them by landslide margins.
Each of the high-dollar donors backed different candidates throughout the campaign — with Whitman backing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ricketts for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, and Singer continuing to back Sen. Marco Rubio, who has yet to win a state in the 2016 race. On the call, no one reportedly discussed getting behind any individual candidate, but rather only discussed stopping Trump.
After Christie announced his endorsement of Trump on Friday, Whitman, currently the CEO of Hewlett-Packard, called him out for his “opportunistic” move. In 2010, Whitman lost the California governor’s race to Jerry Brown.
