Martha Coakley conceded the Massachusetts governor’s race Wednesday morning to Republican Charlie Baker, ending another embarrassing statewide election failure for the Democratic attorney general.
Coakley’s campaign refused to concede the election after it was called by the Associated Press before 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, saying that they would wait for all votes to be counted.
But Coakley called Baker at 8:15 a.m. to concede the election, according to the Boston Globe’s Brian McCrory.
With nearly all precincts reporting, Baker led 48.4 percent to Coakley’s 46.6 percent.
With Coakley admitting defeat, she has officially lost twice in four years to Republicans in the deep-blue Bay State. In 2010, she lost a special election for the seat held by the late Edward Kennedy to Scott Brown, complicating Democrats’ plans for passing healthcare reform.
Coakley was set to hold a press conference at 11 a.m. to announce her concession, according to the Boston Globe.
