Clinton turns back to gun control in Wisconsin

Hillary Clinton touted her record on gun control while speaking in Milwaukee Tuesday, a key area of distinction between her and Bernie Sanders ahead of the Wisconsin primary.

“The availability of guns has gone way too far and the fact that gun makers and sellers have immunity,” Clinton said, trailing off before contrasting her vote against immunity for gun manufacturers immunity with Sanders’ vote for it.

Gun control was a major issue during the Democratic primaries in the South and also in Michigan. As both Clinton and Sanders turned their focus to the Northwest and Southeastern primaries and caucuses the past two weeks, the conversation shifted from gun control to issues such as immigration, job creation and foreign policy.

As Clinron gathered with people affected by gun violence in Milwaukee, she emphasized her history of standing up to the gun lobby, calling them the “toughest” lobby in Washington to fight.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us, but let’s not grow weary doing good because in due time we will harvest if we stay focus,” Clinton said, referencing a Bible verse. “This needs to be a voting issue, not No. 20 on the list but No. 1 on the list, especially in zip codes like this one.”

As Clinton spoke of her voting record, the audience cheered loudly and one mother who lost her son to gun violence made fun of Sanders, saying, “I’m not going to vote for you just because you say you can give free college. If [my child] gets murdered they can’t go to college!”
