Nat Geo throws Titanic-sized party

National Geographic rolled out a red carpet and treated us like we were all kings of the world Wednesday night at a party celebrating the release of the film “Titanic 3-D” and the new National Geographic special “Titanic: The Final Word with James Cameron.” (“Titanic” director Cameron is a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence).

The event, held at the downtown D.C. headquarters of Nat Geo, gave several hundred guests the opportunity to snake through the Titanic exhibit as well, which features objects from the movie, such as a lifeboat, interesting visuals of the ship then and now, and, most importantly, a set that allows guests to perch on the “bow” of the Titanic and pretend to be Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet‘s characters from the movie, Jack and Rose.

The audience was treated to a sneak peak of the Cameron documentary, which airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on the National Geographic Channel. In it, Cameron and a group of scientists detail what they now know is wrong with the 1997 movie and also suggest ways that all aboard the Titanic could be saved. Among the ideas: driving the luxury liner backward to a nearby ship or putting all the passengers on the iceberg.
