Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly, who is in a public feud with Republican front-runner Donald Trump, opened Thursday night’s GOP debate addressing Trump’s absensce.
Kelly asked Ted Cruz, who is tied with Trump in early primary state Iowa, why he for six months heralded Trump as “an effective voice against the Washington cartel,” only to just recently begin criticizing Cruz as a closet liberal.
“I have not insulted Trump personally and I don’t intend to,” Cruz replied. He said that he was “glad” Trump was running because he has created “enthusaism” in the race. He also said he hoped that he would eventually “earn” Trump’s supporters.
Trump said this week he would not be participating in the debate because he felt Kelly would be “unfair” to him. Fox backed up Kelly and sent out press releases mocking Trump.
Instead of the debate, Trump is hosting a fundraiser to raise money for veterans.
