Committee defeats Dulles Toll Road bill

A bill that would have given voters a direct say over increases on the Dulles Toll Road died Tuesday night in the House of Delegates’ Transportation Committee.

Del. Robert Marshall, R-Manassas, introduced the bill because he is upset that the Virginia Department of Transportation is giving control of the toll road to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. MWAA will use the toll revenue to help finance the extension of Metrorail to Dulles International Airport

Marshall’s bill would have required voters in Fairfax and Loudoun counties to approve any increase that would make the toll at the Tysons Corner/Route 7 entrance more than $2 and an exit toll more than $1.

VDOT Secretary Pierce Homer told the House Transportation Committee that the commonwealth and MWAA need to make decades-long financing plans for the project and that Marshall’s bill would create uncertainty over future revenue sources, possibly endangering the project.
