Geraldo celebrates 40th anniversary on air

It’s been that long?

Fox News Channel’s Geraldo Rivera celebrates his 40th year in the broadcast news business this week.

“I’ve been closer to death than any ‘celebrity journalist’ in the last half century. It’s been an amazingly full life. I sometimes get worn out just looking back,” he said.

But after four decades, the veteran newsman is still hanging on.

From the first major AIDS documentary, his chilling interview with Charles Manson, to exposing the $600 toilet seats and gold-plated faucets at the Pentagon, the “Geraldo at Large” host tells Yeas & Nays he’s tracked America’s triumphs and tragedies.

He shared with us his biggest TV cringe moment: “Al Capone‘s vaults. That allowed me to be the fodder of whole generations worth of late night comics,” he said.

He also recalled some of the more favorable moments of his career: “I’m the only man ever to appear on both the covers of Playgirl and Newsweek,” he said.

At 67 years old, Rivera said he wouldn’t change the road that got him here.

Fox will air a special look back at Geraldo’s journey at 10 p.m. Saturday.
