Area conservatives prepare for the worst

“I’ll be at home”

Even though Election Night tends to get Washingtonians all hot and excited, the funny thing is this: Most political types and journalists in town have work to do that night, be it celebrating, networking, reporting, plotting and scheming.

So it is, then, that lots of folks around town have less than thrilling plans this evening…especially conservatives, who seem to be bracing for defeat.

The Club for Growth’s Pat Toomey says he’ll just be hanging at work. “Not a big bash, more like a wake.” Fellow conservative David Keene, from the American Conservative Union, has equally bland plans. “I’ll be watching them at home” (where it’s easier to hide a look of defeat…?). Eagle Forum’s Phyllis Schlafly follows suit. “I’ll be at home, no party,” she told us. Heck, even the president won’t be up to much. “The President and Mrs. Bush will be having a small dinner up in the residence tomorrow evening,” said spokeswoman Dana Perino. (Mr. and Mrs. Bush voted by absentee ballot in Texas.)

On the other hand, some Democrats are just playing coy, trying not to count their eggs before they hatch. Brookings Institution President Strobe Talbott told Yeas & Nays that he’s “not doing anything.” (Considering that lots of Brookings types will likely head to the Executive Branch if Obama wins, we find that hard to believe.) And an aide to former White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry told us that “his plans are fluid, and nothing’s been set.”

Some Democrats, however, are already expecting victory and plan to do it up proper. Loads of Democratic pols and politicos will be at the Hyatt Regency, where the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign committee will party. Elsewhere, Rep. Frank Wolf is hosting a post-election reception at the Holiday Inn near Dulles International Airport. Gov Tim Kaine and Sen. Jim Webb host a party at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner.
