Kerry uses Twitter, e-mail list to lobby for baseball player

Despite an inability to win big races himself, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is rallying for baseball fans to vote for Boston Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis to win the final spot on the American League’s All-Star team.

The senator used his johnkerry.com e-mail mailing list to send out an e-mail plea to vote for “Youk,” citing “what the Senate calls a ‘point of personal privilege’ ” and making it a matter of Yankees versus Red Sox (the other front-runner is Yankees star Nick Swisher).

Kerry also took to Twitter on Tuesday for the first time in a few weeks, tweeting to “Vote Youk on to all Star Team — don’t let it go to that Yankee” with a link to vote.

We think Kerry better be careful. Chicago White Sox player Paul Konerko also is on the list, and we can only guess what would happen if President Obama used some of his executive sway to weigh in on the vote. Lucky for Kerry, Obama would have to move quickly, since online voting ends at 4 p.m. Thursday.
