NY poll: Trump up 36 points on Cruz

Donald Trump has a massive lead on the Republican field in a new poll of his home state of New York.

Trump earned the support of 56 percent of those surveyed by Quinnipiac University, followed by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz at 20 percent, and Ohio Gov. John Kasich at 19. About four percent of respondents described themselves as undecided on the Republican race, but 23 percent said they could change their mind.

“The home-court advantage helps both party’s front-runners in the presidential primaries in New York,” said Maurice Carroll, Quinnipiac University poll assistant director, in a statement. “Donald Trump, whose name is emblazoned all over New York City buildings, trounces the other two Republicans, while Hillary Clinton, the adopted daughter from Chappaqua leads Sanders in double digits on the Democratic side.”

Clinton, the former secretary of state, has a 12-point advantage over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 54-42, built upon the support of a majority of female Democrats. Sanders, however, has a slight edge on Clinton among men.

The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,667 New Yorkers, including 457 Republican likely voters and 693 Democratic likely voters, from March 22-29. The poll of the Republican voters had a 4.6 percentage point margin of error, while the survey of Democratic voters had a 3.7 percentage point margin of error.

The New York primary will occur on April 19, two weeks after the next nominating contest of Wisconsin holds its primary.
