Poll: Trump holds slight lead over Cruz

Donald Trump is edging Sen. Ted Cruz by a slim three-point margin in the race for the Republican nomination as the contest reaches mid-March and the winner-take-all stage of the process, according to a new poll.

According to the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Trump leads Cruz 30-27 percent nationwide, within the margin of error, while topping both Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Sen. Marco Rubio, who hold 22 percent and 20 percent support, respectively.

The poll is their first conducted since Super Tuesday, when Trump won seven of 11 states and kept up his lead in the delegate race, although that was cut down by Cruz with his two victories on Saturday night in Kansas and Maine.

While Trump is still leading, he loses when pitted head-to-head against all of his GOP opponents. He loses to Cruz and Kasich by 17 points (57-40 percent), while falling to Rubio by 13 points (56-43 percent), with whom he is currently locked in a tight battle ahead of the Florida primary March 15.

In the previous poll taken in mid-February, Cruz topped Trump by two points (28 percent to 26 percent), marking the first time anyone had polled ahead of the real estate mogul since early November when Ben Carson, who ended his campaign Friday, took the lead.
