Government wants people to make ‘fruit kabobs’

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is encouraging people to serve up shish kebabs made out of fruit, or “fruit kabobs,” as a way to celebrate the fact that “spring is on the way.”

“Get excited for warmer weather w/fruit kabobs!” tweeted USDA’s MyPlate, a wing of the department that offers nonstop advice about how to eat better and serve your family healthy food.

A link in the tweet takes readers to USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service, which has a recipe for fruit kabobs. It calls for ripe banana slices, watermelon cubes and clementine sections.

“Thread the fruit onto the skewers, alternating and arranging it however you like,” says step one of the directions. Step two is easy: “Serve right away.”

MyPlate also lists entire cookbooks online, along with videos showing people how to cook. It also has “cookbooks for schools.”

MyPlate has taken a page out of first lady Michelle Obama’s book by encouraging people to exercise more. It’s also given a nod to the environment, buy encouraging people to reduce their food waste.

Last week, USDA’s advice on how to throw away less food is to “store older items in the front of the fridge so you can eat them first.”
