Americans more concerned about growing Islamic State threat

The threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is a growing concern among Americans, according to a poll released Monday.

According to a poll by CNN/ORC International, 76 percent favor additional airstrikes against the Islamic State, with 45 percent of Americans seeing it as a “very serious threat to the U.S.”

Forty-nine percent thought the very same of al Qaeda 11 years ago.

Four years ago, only three percent of Americans believed terrorism to be the most important issue facing the country, a number that has now increased to 14 percent.

“The number who say that terrorism is the country’s most important problem has quadrupled, making it second only to the economy on the list of top problems in the public’s mind,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

More than three-quarters of those polled support military aid to forces currently fighting the Islamic State.
