Before J. Edgar Hoover‘s life is flashed up on the big screen in the Clint Eastwood biopic “J. Edgar” hitting theaters Nov. 9, local best-selling author Ronald Kessler has already shed some light on the former FBI director’s relationship with his second in command Clyde Tolson. Kessler writes about the duo in his new book “The Secrets of the FBI” and discussed it at a dinner party thrown in his honor Wednesday night at Teatro Goldoni.
“They would go to lunch and dinner every day, they would go on vacations together, they would take pictures of each other and ultimately Hoover left his whole estate to Tolson, worth about $3 million in today’s dollars,” Kessler said. “Clearly, there was a relationship that was not heterosexual–Hoover lived with his mother until he was 43 years old–so they had what I called a spousal relationship.” That being said, Kessler dismissed stories that Hoover dressed like a cross-dresser.
Dinner guests included Fox News Channel’s Juan Williams, his wife Delise (who was rocking a purple streak in her hair and matching purple specs) and radio host Bill Press.
