More than 30,000 people filled the White House South Lawn for a day of basketball, storytelling, food and games at the 134th White House Easter Egg Roll Monday morning. The Obama family presided over the crowd, which buzzed over the famous faces in its midst.
A host of Disney Channel stars got the youth vote, with Zendaya Coleman from “Shake It Up” drawing lots of applause from the kids. President Obama and Julianne Moore impressed the grown-ups with their storytelling. Obama reprised his performance of “Where the Wild Things Are” from previous egg rolls, complete with teeth-gnashing and roaring. (First dog Bo electrified the reading audience by barking along.) Malia and Sasha Obama also took turns reading “A Sick Day for Amos McGee.”
Showing strong dedication to the egg roll, Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, fresh off vacation, flew down just to read “The Little Engine That Could” before hopping back on a plane to New York.
Over by the White House kitchen garden, a purple-pants-clad Michelle Obama joined chef Marcus Samuelsson and “The Today Show’s” Al Roker to serve up a round of veggie and shrimp tacos. The first lady extolled the benefits of eating vegetables while kids squeezed lime juice onto their tacos. Upon hearing a woman in the audience call vegetables “very expensive,” Obama suggested she buy produce in season or frozen to cut down on costs. She also advocated skipping the “fried chicken and the carb-heavy dinners, the kind we all love.”
“The Biggest Loser’s” Bob Harper manned the obstacle course, dressed on the sunny spring morning in black pants and a black faux alligator motorcycle jacket.
