Secretary Gates receives American Patriot Award

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the intelligence, national security and defense communities with the National Defense University Foundation’s American Patriot Award at a gala at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center on Friday night. Former President George H.W. Bush could not be there but provided a video message honoring Secretary Gates’ achievements throughout his career.

U.S. Air Force Secretary Michael Donley and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General James Cartwright were among the 600 guests who attended the event. Republic of Korea Army Gen. Paik Sun-yup traveled across the Pacific to honor Gates. During his remarks, Gates said humbly, “We must never forget that our comfort and safety are borne on the brave and broad shoulders of those young men and women in uniform.” He accepted the honor on behalf of those who serve the country.
