‘Blows the roof off’
So how does this week compare to the last time we saw the promise of hope and change coming from the other side of the aisle? For perspective, we asked Ken Duberstein, the former chief of staff to President Reagan, who co-hosted a VIP-studded party at the residence of Kuwaiti Ambassador Salem Al-Sabeh on Sunday night.
Duberstein said he recalls similar themes from early 1981. “Remember in 1980, we were in a recession, we had hostages in Iran, there was low respect for America throughout the world,” he said. “Sound familiar?”
But, he added, there is one big difference between Reagan’s inauguration and Obama’s. “Add the historical nature of Barack Obama and it just blows the roof off,” he said.
