Day Three: DNC Schedule

(All times are Eastern Standard)

5 p.m. – Convention is called back into session. The night’s theme is “Securing America’s Future.” The Obama campaign said it will outline a “new, tough foreign policy approach that is neither Republican nor Democratic.”

The Democratic National Committee will not release the exact order of the speakers until Wednesday morning, but they include a star’s list of the party’s officeholders:

Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who himself ran for the nomination is expected to play a key role this fall in trying to convince Hispanics to vote for Obama.

Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana and Jack Reed of Rhode Island were both on Obama’s short list for vice president.

Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, the presidential nominee in 2004, endorsed Obama early in this election cycle. So did former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle. And Daschle’s successor as Senate leader, Harry Reid of Nevada, also is on the schedule.

By far, though, the night’s two most anticipated speakers are vice presidential nominee (designate) Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton. Biden’s job will be to take the fight to his friend John McCain and to appeal to blue collar workers. And Clinton’s will be to build on his wife’s theme of party unity from Tuesday night.

Clinton has been famously reluctant to get fully on board the Obama bandwagon, though, which is why so much drama attends his remarks.
