Erick Erickson says he nearly died from lung condition

UPDATE:

Erick Erickson tweeted Monday afternoon that his health is improving.

“Good news: getting discharged from the hospital to my own bed. Still need lots of rest, but I can do it at home. Thanks for the prayers,” he said.

Erickson also posted a picture on Instagram showing his arm after a vein “blew” on Thursday. After doctors put blood thinner in his arm, much of Erickson’s arm turned a dark shade of purple.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Conservative radio host Erick Erickson is in the hospital due to a condition that left his lungs “showered” in blot clots and almost killed him, the pundit said.

In a Sunday night blog post titled “Trying Not to Die,” the former RedState editor-in-chief revealed why he’s been under the radar in recent days. He described going through months in which he became easily winded while exercising, loading his car and even delivering a radio monologue.

Over the course of several doctors visits, Erickson said doctors found that his blood-oxygen dropped to 93 percent. Last week he experienced further shortness of breath and had to cancel an speaking engagement in Connecticut. Erickson was sent to a hospital Thursday after a last-minute visit to a cardiologist revealed he had pulmonary hypertension.

Doctors found a potentially deadly situation in which Erickson’s lungs were being filled with blood clots.

“My blood oxygen level cratered to the point of numb lips and the act of putting shampoo in my hair was leaving me out of breath,” Erickson wrote.

“It is rather sobering to have doctors tell you that you should be dead,” he said.

Erickson said he is healing slowly in the hospital and that his blood-oxygen level is back into the high nineties. He added that he’ll need a few more days before he is able to reengage with the world again and thanked everyone for their “thoughts and prayers.”

In a companion series of tweets, Erickson took a shot at supporters of Republican candidate Donald Trump, who apparently have said harsh things about him. Erickson got into feud with the billionaire businessman last year when he banned Trump from the annual RedState gathering of conservatives because of disparaging comments made about Fox News’ Megyn Kelly.

Erickson later wrote he will never vote for Trump, whom he claims is not a real conservative and whose campaign is a “farce.”

Sunday evening there were several messages of well wishes sent Erickson’s way, including from 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who tweeted, “God bless you for a full and rapid recovery.”
