President Obama joked Monday that just like him, many of the nation’s governors who are in their last year in office are busying themselves trying to sew up things like appointing judges.
“Some of you might be in the final year of your last term, working as hard as you can to get as much done as possible for the folks that you represent,” Obama said in brief remarks to the National Governors Association.
“Fixing roads, educating our children, helping people retrain, appointing judges … the usual stuff,” he said to laughter.
Obama has started the process of finding a nominee to replace the late Antonin Scalia, who died unexpectedly on Feb. 13. Republicans have said they wouldn’t allow any of Obama’s picks to go forward, and say the next president should choose a nominee instead.
On Sunday, Obama joked to the same group that he might be considering a run for a governor’s seat.
“This is my final governors’ dinner, at least least my final one as president,” Obama said. “I’m just kidding. It’s a joke people. I wanted to see how Michelle would react.”
