Kasich fundraising off Trump, Cruz wives battle

Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s presidential campaign is distributing a fundraising pitch referencing his Republican rivals’ dispute about their wives.

Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have discussed their wives routinely during the past week, following ads and tweets depicting their spouses in unflattering ways by Republican operatives and Trump’s personal Twitter account.

Trump threatened to “spill the beans” about Cruz’s wife via Twitter, after a super PAC unaffiliated with Cruz ran an ad featuring an image of Trump’s wife modeling semi-nude. Cruz subsequently praised Trump’s wife, and Trump responded by tweeting a photo juxtaposing the two men’s spouses. Cruz’s spouse looked disheveled in the image promoted by Trump, while Trump’s wife appeared to be posing for the camera.

“Over the weekend I was asked to comment on the recent personal attacks that Trump and Cruz have been slinging at each other and my answer was simple: Families should be off limits,” Kasich wrote in the email solicitation. “Enough is enough with the mud slinging and the personal attacks. It’s time to get serious and select a Republican who can win in the fall.”

While Kasich has portrayed his candidacy as capable of winning in the fall, he has been mathematically eliminated from earning the delegates needed to wrap up the GOP nomination before the convention this summer. He lost the Arizona primary last week and trailed someone who dropped out of the presidential race before Election Day in the Grand Canyon State.

Kasich, who has previously said he’s not sure it’s his “purpose” to become president, will campaign in Wisconsin on Monday.
