Belgium arrests two suspected of NYC terror plot

Police in Belgium arrested two people they suspect of plotting to attack New York City landmarks on New Year’s Eve.

Officials told CNN that the self-proclaimed Islamic State inspired the suspects’ plans, but that the terrorist group was not calling the shots.

Belgian authorities said Tuesday that the duo was part of a conspiracy to strike “emblematic sites” during New York’s famed New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Although Belgium, and its capital, Brussels, became the center for the investigation into the Islamic State’s Nov. 13 rampage on Paris and subsequent manhunt for some of the surviving assailants, Belgian counterterrorism authorities said the two plots were not linked.
