Tom Steyer’s super PAC doesn’t appear to be on pace to reach a widely reported $100 million fundraising goal — a goal Steyer claims he didn’t set.
NextGen Climate Action raised nearly $43 million through the end of August, according to Open Secrets.
Steyer disputes the origins of the fundraising goal, telling the Los Angeles Times the goal was set by “somebody I don’t know who has never owned up to it.”
Steyer declined to confirm a fundraising goal when the New York Times first reported on his political plans in February. The Times cited figures “involved in the discussion” to reach the $100 million number.
Steyer told C-SPAN in April that “a hundred million bucks would be very low, honestly” if that were the price for making the issue the “most important” in the minds of Americans.
NextGen has been involved in races in Colorado, Iowa, Michigan and New Hampshire, according to Open Secrets.
