Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., on Wednesday introduced a resolution urging the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group be included in any new strategy for the Iraq war.
Wolf was the driving force behind the creation of the group, which presented its recommendations for Iraq policy to President Bush in December. The president has endorsed some of the suggestion made by the panel, which included former U.S. Sen. Charles Robb of Virginia.
“The Iraq Study Group’s recommendations provide a comprehensive blueprint to move ahead in Iraq,” Wolf said while introducing the resolution. “It has all the components of a successful plan, from the military perspective to the diplomatic perspective, and is in my opinion the best way to move forward.”
Wolf urged Bush to undertake former President Ronald Reagan’s policy of engagement with the Soviet Union by including Syria in talks with securing the Mideast region. Democratic Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, called for similar engagement in the Democratic response to the State of the Union address.
President Bush has ruled out involving Syria.
“We have seen that the current Iraq policy is not working. Being willing to talk to Syria is not a sign of weakness, but of self-confidence,” Wolf said.
