Afternoon Links: Hecklers to the Left of Me, Hecklers to the Right, Here We Are

Corey Stewart and the alt-right, cont’d… Doomed Virginia senate GOP nominee Corey Stewart has been dinged for his documented associations with unsavory and racist members of the alt-right. He’s tried to walk some (but not all) back, he just can’t help himself! He was photographed at Trump Hotel with alt-right shock jock Laura Loomer, who endorsed him formally on Twitter. Which he promptly retweeted.

USA TODAY launches a conservative opinion newsletter. Based out of the “heartland,” the publishing giant appears poised to move into some new media space.

Tax all the things! Most people were focused on the travel ban ruling today, but the court also completely changed the landscape for sales taxes on internet purchases. Slowly, over time, Amazon—which used to collect sales tax only in states in which it had a physical presence—has begun collecting sales taxes virtually everywhere. (Because it is operating pretty much everywhere these days.

The 5-4 Wayfair decision changes all of that. Gone are the days of Quill, which permitted remote sellers without a physical nexus in a buyer’s jurisdiction to not collect local sales taxes

Jim Acosta heckled. CNN’s Jim Acosta is often used as a punching bag by the Trump press team, and Monday at a campaign rally, was heckled by the audience before the speeches started. In a video posted by CNN, you can see some folks coming over to take selfies with Acosta. Others apologized for the behavior of their raucous fellow attendees.

Speaking of hecklers… The Senate intern who shouted “F–k you!” at President Trump gets to keep her job. Sen. Maggie Hassan, who employs the 21-year-old intern, suspended her for a week and revoked her government-issued badge that permits access to the U.S. Capitol building. Some have questioned whether or not the intern’s name should have been revealed. I understand that, especially given what we’re seeing from the angry mobs on the right and left harassing people with whom they disagree. But government service, even interning, does not provide a shield from accountability for one’s actions. I’ve seen interns fired for far less, and at least this young woman gets to keep her job. Sadly, the notoriety of this all will probably be a feather in her cap as she runs for office somewhere in the near future. Can’t you imagine the campaign ad? Idiocracy here we come.

Protected bird postpones mega music festival. Oh, Canada. In Ottawa, a killdeer and her eggs are preventing a major music festival from happening. Apparently, the killdeer has its own security guard. Now that’s service!

How’s your news/opinion radar? It’s always good to check up on your ability to discern fact from opinion, and the fine folks at Pew have you covered with a short check-up test.

This is confusing. Our own Mike Warren is (rightly) confused about this bizarre music video by Emin Agalarov: “I’m a little confused about the narrative here. Trump and Ivanka and Hillary and Stormy Daniels and Emin Agalarov all exchanged money in sneaky ways, then they played poker together?” Maybe the maze wasn’t meant for us.
