The mother of an American killed in the Benghazi terrorist attack said Thursday that she’s still waiting for answers about how her son was killed in 2012, and says former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton never offered her an explanation after promising one.
Clinton said in Wednesday’s Democratic debate that Patricia Smith, the mother of Sean Smith, was “absolutely wrong” when she said the Obama administration lied to her about the events surrounding the attack.
“She’s absolutely wrong,” Clinton said. “I and everybody in the administration, we were scrambling to get information that was changing, literally by the hour. And when we had information, we made it public. But then sometimes we had to go back and say we have new information that contradicts it.”
But on Thursday, Smith explained that Clinton, President Obama, Vice President Biden and other top-ranking officials had personally told her in the days after the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya that they would get back to her with the final results of their investigation, and why the government’s rescue initiatives failed.
“[Clinton] has never once spoken to me or her office. The only thing I ever got out of them is that I am not a member of the immediate family and I don’t need to know,” Smith told Fox Business News’ “The Intelligence Report.”
“All I want is for Hillary to tell me what happened. What’s political about that? I think that as a mother I deserve to know. Can’t anybody there, anybody, anybody from my government tell me, what happened? Because Hillary won’t. And it was her department,” Smith added.
Clinton defended her response, telling the University of Miami debate audience she repeatedly informed the public about changes in the State Department’s findings. But Smith said that was not what Clinton had promised to her and the other family members of the four murdered Americans.
“I want them to tell me what happened I want the government not to call me a liar because that is incredible. I don’t lie like that. She is a proven liar,” Smith said.
