Stein raises enough money for Wisconsin recount

Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein has raised enough money in one day for a recount in Wisconsin, according to her campaign.

Stein pulled in $2.7 million from supporters in less than 24 hours after she asked them to help fund expensive recount efforts in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, three traditionally swing states where President-elect Donald Trump barely beat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Stein had said she needed to raise $2 million by Friday in order to ensure a recount in Wisconsin. She also aims to raise $500,000 for filing fees in Pennsylvania and $600,000 for filing fees in Michigan.

“Congratulations on meeting the recount costs for Wisconsin. Raising money to pay for the first round so quickly is a miraculous feat and a tribute to the power of grassroots organizing,” her campaign said in a statement.

“Now that we have nearly completed funding Wisconsin’s recount (which is due on Friday), we can begin to tackle the funding for Michigan’s recount (due Monday) and Pennsylvania’s recount (due Wednesday),” it said.

The states are likely to conduct expensive recounts only if Clinton pushes for them. Officials in all three states told the Associated Press on Wednesday that no recounts have been ordered.

But Stein said she feels recounts are needed due to “compelling evidence of voting anomalies” in vote totals released by state authorities.

“These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified,” Stein said in a statement. “We deserve elections we can trust.”
