Dems call for national ‘day of reason’

Two House Democrats have proposed a resolution calling on the government to recognize May 5 as a “national day of reason,” when people should use to focus on “critical thought, the scientific method and free inquiry to the resolution of human problems.”

The resolution recognizes the use of reason for the “betterment of humanity,” and says reason is a critical component of human life.

“[T]he application of reason has proven to offer hope for human survival upon Earth, improving conditions within the universe and cultivating intelligent, moral and ethical interactions among people and their environments,” the resolution reads.

The resolution says those who wrote the Constitution based it on principles developed in the “Age of Reason,” and said “most citizens” of the country “purport to value reason and its application.”

It was offered by Rep. Mike Honda, D-Calif., and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C.
