Afternoon Links: Swimming in the Swamp and a ‘Mooving’ Proposal

Best inning of the season? It’s fair to say that the Milwaukee Brewers can lay claim to that honor, but there’s still some baseball left.

Bring on the cheese! There’s an old joke from Lewis Black about the confusion of conflicting studies whether or not eggs are good for you. Now, a new study is encouraging people to reconsider low-dairy diets.

Swimming in the swamp. These days, people are encouraged to stay out of the Potomac river. (Whether or not it’s illegal is a complicated debate.) Nearly 100 years ago, there was a swimming beach at the tidal basin, and Washingtonian provides some old photos looking back.

After you vote, how about a movie? A movie about politics, perhaps? This Election Day, a new movie comes out: The Front Runner, recounting the end of Senator Gary Hart’s career during the 1988 Democratic primary.

A moooving proposal? Or animal abuse? This Scottish man’s, uh, unique marriage proposal is endearing to some, offensive to others.

That’ll work. California liberals are mad that the In-N-Out chain donated money to the Republican party. Some are calling for boycotts. As a Midwesterner, I think In-N-Out is overrated, but as a White Castle aficionado, I am no stranger to being a devoted fan. Boycotts didn’t work with Chick-fil-A, and probably won’t work here, either. And of course, we all know that America’s favorite hamburger is from Five Guys.

Speaking of the Golden State… It seems that road crews there are stopping traffic to hand out fliers pushing opposition to a ballot initiative that would repeal the state’s gas tax. Whoever dreamed up this strategy didn’t anticipate that it might backfire.
