Sorry Obama, but indie pop band and children of the eighties – Au Revoir Simone– pick Pee-wee Herman over the president.
The electronic threesome of lovely femmes from Brooklyn were in town for a Saturday night show at Washington’s own hipster enclave, The Rock and Roll Hotel on H Street NE.
But where’d they spend their day? The White House, where dreams of meeting Obama were only matched by the star of the film to which their band’s name plays homage, Tim Burton’s “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.”
“While we were there we thought, ‘The only thing better than a picture with Obama would be a picture with Pee-wee,” member Erika Forster jokingly recounted to Yeas & Nays at a Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce before their show at L2 in Georgetown.
Turns out Au Revoir Simone – who counts actress Kristen Dunst, director David Lynch and Paul Reubens (natch) as fans – were given a tour by their friend Ben Chang, who is also President Barack Obama’s National Security Council spokesman.
We heard Chang rocked out at the show as the girl’s DJ that evening, giving us Washingtonians one more piece of coolness cred.
