Rand Paul to Americans in poverty: ‘Give Republicans another chance’

Republicans must broaden their appeal to Americans in poverty by touting growth-oriented economic policies such as lower taxes, Kentucky senator and Republican presidential prospect Rand Paul said this week.

“Republicans need to realize that if we’re going to win national elections again, the ‘same-old same-old’ that has been losing is not going to win again,” Paul said in an interview with CBN News.

“I am spending a lot of time going to areas of big cities where people live in poverty, and there is high unemployment, and there is this sort of despair,” Paul said. “And I’m saying, ‘you know what? Give Republicans another chance.'”

Paul singled out the financially ruined Detroit, the largest U.S. city in bankruptcy, saying conservative policies including tax cuts would rekindle economies and result in more income.

President Obama won Detroit with 98 percent of the vote in the 2012 election. Democratic dominance in impoverished areas is so lopsided that the party’s candidates take those voters for granted, Paul said.

“I don’t hear any answers coming from the Democrats,” he said. “The Democrats have taken this vote for granted and they say ‘these people, they’re always going to vote for us. We don’t have to do anything.’ And they frankly aren’t doing anything to help the people of Detroit.”
