Rogers ready to speak out, in Chicago

A Chicago group is one-upping Congress by getting former White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers to publicly open up.

Rogers, who has now formally left her post at the White House, will appear as a special guest at a Chicago luncheon titled “A Conversation With Desiree Rogers” in front of the business group Chicago Advertising Federation. For $85 the general public is invited to join. Rogers will be interviewed by Gloria Scoby of Crain Communications Inc., and at least part of the discussion will be devoted to Rogers’ time at the White House. If Scoby doesn’t bring up the elephant in the room — the three uninvited guests at the White House state dinner — luncheon attendees will have the opportunity to question Rogers as well, though they are being asked to submit their questions online. The Chicago Advertising Federation did not respond by press time when asked if questions regarding the state dinner would be permitted. The luncheon takes place April 29.

And speaking of social secretaries, Monday marks the first big public event for newbie Social Secretary Julianna Smoot. While she’s been spotted at several White House events already, her first big task is the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year it will include appearances by pop singer Justin Bieber, actress Reese Witherspoon, Olympian Apolo Ohno, author J.K. Rowling of “Harry Potter” fame and the cast of the TV hit “Glee,” among others. More about the Easter Egg Roll in Tuesday’s Yeas & Nays.
