The rather unlikely duo of Hillary Clinton and Christina Aguilera appeared together in the Benjamin Franklin room at the State Department Wednesday, where Aguilera was honored with the George McGovern Leadership award.
Aguilera, who is an ambassador for the World Food Program and has traveled around the world to advocate for nutrition, sat in a burgundy halter dress, hair in a demure bun, while Clinton introduced her. The secretary demonstrated her pop culture chops with a reference to Aguilera’s role on the show “The Voice.”
“If I could sing, Christina, I would want to be on your team,” Clinton said, to big laughs. “But since I can’t, I’m glad you’re on this team.” She also joked that her favorite of Aguilera’s videos was one of her singing “Itsy Bitsy Spider” to kids in Haiti.
Honored alongside the singer was David Novak, CEO of Yum! Brands. Yum!’s World Hunger Relief Initiative, of which Aguilera serves as global spokesperson, has raised $115 million for the World Food program and other organizations and provided 460 million meals to children worldwide.
