Paul Ryan backs McCarthy for speakership

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., offered his support for House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to take over for John Boehner as speaker of the House.

Ryan announced his backing of McCarthy in an op-ed Sunday, calling him a “principled leader who gets results” and praising McCarthy’s leadership on a myriad of issues over the past decade.

Ryan argued that McCarthy is “exceptionally good at bringing people together,” adding that he “doesn’t shy away from the important fights.”

“Kevin’s record in Congress demonstrates a rare combination of principle, leadership and effectiveness,” Ryan wrote of McCarthy in the Townhall op-ed Sunday.

The 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee’s announcement came on the heels of reports that Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, would also be seeking the post, which Chaffetz confirmed Sunday during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. In addition to Chaffetz, Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla., has also announced his bid for speakership.

Ryan, who also chairs the House Ways and Means committee, wrote that he has “no doubt” McCarthy’s “experience and skills make him the best choice for speaker.”

Boehner is set to resign the speakership at the end of the month, and elections for the speakership are scheduled to take place Oct. 8.
