The Navy has fired the commander of the base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, amid an ongoing criminal investigation that reportedly involves the death of a civilian worker whose wife was allegedly having an affair with the commander.
A Navy statement said Capt. John R. Nettleton was relieved Wednesday due to “loss of confidence in Nettleton’s ability to command.” He was reassigned to a staff job in Jacksonville, Fla.
He had been commander of the naval base since June 2012. The detention center for suspected terrorists on the base is under separate command.
The Navy would not provide any further details due to the ongoing investigation, but the Associated Press, citing unnamed U.S. officials, reported that the Naval Criminal Investigative Service had discovered that Nettleton was having an affair with the wife of Christopher Tur, a civilian worker on the base who was found dead Jan. 11.
