Conservative Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan bemoaned that there is no such thing as a “Sane Donald Trump,” because if there were, she would love to have him as president.
In an op-ed published Thursday night, Noonan, a former Reagan White House speechwriter, said she sympathizes with most of Trump’s policy positions — his calls for more immigration restriction and reworked trade deals — but that his ego rendered him incapable of following through.

“Since I am more in accord with Mr. Trump’s stands than not, I am particularly sorry that as an individual human being he’s a nut,” she said. “Which gives rise to a question, for me a poignant one. What if there had been a Sane Donald Trump? Oh my God, Sane Trump would have won in a landslide.”
Though Trump won the Republican nomination handily, his general election campaign was dotted by a seemingly endless series of controversies, big and small, and he demonstrated an unwillingness to restrain his instincts to lash out when under scrutiny.
Most national and state-level polls show Democrat Hillary Clinton with a signicant lead ahead of Election Day.
“Sane Donald Trump for president,” wrote Noonan. “Too bad he doesn’t exist.”
