Close quarters
If you asked most Americans to spend six consecutive days in a cramped space in the middle of nowhere with two of their coworkers, most would say no thank you. Astronauts don’t have that luxury.
So it’s no surprise that former astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders took a few playful jabs at each other Thursday afternoon at a NASA-sponsored discussion, as they relived their days on the Apollo 8 mission.
“It was a long six days,” said Lovell, who also was on board the ill-fated Apollo 13.
“Anders was a pain in the ass” who threw up all over me in outer space, Borman added.
Anders didn’t let him off easy, firing back that Borman was the “press darling” and got to “travel all over the world, while Jim and I had to get back to work.”
Lovell said the best part about the mission was when he “saw water splashing on the window,” signaling that they were home.
